Orange

Arusione is Orange, named after a spring god, Arausio. Near here in 105 BC the Cimbri crushed two Roman armies, and a summary of the Roman historian Livy speaks of eighty thousand soldiers killed. Shortly after 36 BC veterans of the Second Legion were settled here, and the colony took the full name Colonia Iulia Firma Secundanorum Arausio. Its Roman theatre and triumphal arch still stand, and the stone land-survey plans of Orange are famous. The map drops a letter, writing the name without the second a.
