Asciburgia[/o

Moers-Asberg

Asciburgia is Asciburgium, at Moers-Asberg in Germany, across the Rhine from the mouth of the Ruhr. The Roman historian Tacitus reports a strange local legend: Odysseus himself, on his long wanderings, had come to the Rhine and founded the place, and an altar dedicated to him, with his father Laertes named on it, had once been found there. The first fort was built shortly before 12 BC for Drusus's campaigns into Germany, and in 69 the rebellious Batavians destroyed it. On the map the end of the name is lost where the parchment is damaged.
