Astibo

Štip ?

Astibo is probably Štip in North Macedonia, whose name still echoes it. The place took its name from a river, the Astibos, probably the Bregalnica, in which, as the Greek writer Polyaenus tells, the kings of the Paeonians bathed at their coronation. On the map Astibo and Tranupara may have swapped places, for the mapmaker struggled to fit so many names and figures along this road, and older research reversed them. The list of places compiled in Ravenna may have merged the two into a single Istubera.
