Road station
Aufinum
Brücke über den Ofanto an dessen Mündung [3 · 4]
Listen to the story
Aufinum was the stop at the bridge where the coast road of Apulia crossed the Aufidus, now the Ofanto, near its mouth, the river beside which Hannibal won his great victory at Cannae. It is probably the trading post of the people of Canusium on the Aufidus that the Greek geographer Strabo mentions. Unusually for such a river station, a Roman register of routes lists it too, under the name Aufidena.
