Augustis

Hârlets

Augustis is Augustae, a Roman fort at the mouth of the Ogosta on the Danube, near Hârlets in Bulgaria. Dalmatian horsemen were stationed here in late Roman times; Justinian restored the fort, and in 583 the khagan of the Avars captured it, as the Byzantine historian Theophylact Simocatta records. On the map the letters us are written as a small flourish above the line, a scribe's abbreviation. The map's six miles from Camistrum are too few: a station, Regianum, seems to have dropped out between them.
