Aufidena
Castel di Sangro
Listen to the story
Aufidena, now Castel di Sangro near the springs of the river Sangro, was a town of the Samnites, whose older stronghold lay a few kilometres away at Alfedena, ringed by polygonal walls about as long as those of earliest Rome on the Palatine; well over a thousand graves have been excavated there. Rome captured Aufidena in 298 BC, and only after 49 BC did it become a municipium.
