Augusta Viromanduorum

Saint-Quentin

Listen to the story

Augusta Viromanduorum, the Augusta of the Viromandui, is Saint-Quentin on the Somme in northern France, the chief town of this Belgic people. An inscription of the second century shows them as a self-governing community with a full set of magistrates. The town later took its name from the martyr Quentin, and a quarter of Saint-Quentin long kept an echo of the old name, Détroit d'Aoust. For a long time scholars argued whether Augusta lay here or at nearby Vermand, but the evidence favours Saint-Quentin. The map abbreviates the name heavily.
