Augusta Suessorum
Soissons
Listen to the story
Augusta Suessorum, the town of Augustus among the Suessiones, a Gallic people of the province of Belgica, is Soissons on the river Aisne in France. The name seems to date back to the emperor's own lifetime, and a Roman milestone from Tongeren records it too. Whether this was the Noviodunum mentioned by Julius Caesar is still disputed. In late antiquity it was simply called the city of the Suessiones and became a bishop's seat. On the map, a figure of twenty-one miles marks a road leaving the town, but no line is drawn for it, and whether that road ever existed remains a puzzle.
