Listen to the story

Atuaca is Tongeren in Belgium, chief town of the Tungri, the people who took the place of the Eburones after Caesar's day. It is usually identified with Aduatuca, the stronghold named and besieged in Julius Caesar's account of the Gallic War, though older research sought it at several other sites. The Roman writer Pliny mentions a warm, iron-rich spring here, and the historian Gregory of Tours says Attila destroyed the town. On the map two roads meet at the station, and in 1817 a fragment of an eight-sided stone column listing Roman routes was found nearby.
