Artaxata

Artashat, Արտաշատ

Listen to the story

Artaxata was the capital of Greater Armenia, founded around 188 BC by King Artaxias on the advice of Hannibal, who is said to have planned the city himself while a guest at the Armenian court. It stood on a fortified peninsula in a bend of the Araxes river, near modern Artashat in Armenia. In AD 58 the Roman general Corbulo burned it, since holding it would have needed too large a garrison. Rebuilt by King Tiridates, it was renamed Neronia in honour of Nero, yet the old name prevailed. The map marks it with a pair of towers and sends three roads out from it.
