Arimino
Rimini
Listen to the story
Ariminum, today Rimini on the Adriatic coast of Italy, began as a Latin colony of six thousand settlers in 268 BC, an outpost guarding the way into Cisalpine Gaul. The Tabula gives it the usual pair of towers, close to the river Rubicon. Roads met here: the Via Flaminia arrived from Rome in 220 BC, and the Via Aemilia later led on towards Placentia. The arch honouring Augustus from 27 BC still stands, as does the bridge he began and Tiberius completed in AD 22. In 358 a church council at Ariminum debated with the Arians.
