Listen to the story
Aris, marked on the map with the usual pair of towers, was probably Zaris, capital of the Persian province of Drangiana. The missing first letter may go back to a blurred Greek zeta. Its ruins, called Dahan-i Ghulaman, lie in Sistan near the border between Iran and Afghanistan. The city was laid out as if on a drawing board in the late sixth or early fifth century BC, with palaces, a treasury, a cult building and a post station. Within a hundred to a hundred and fifty years it was abandoned, because the arm of the Helmand river that supplied its water had shifted.
