Artane
bei Şile
Listen to the story
Artane was both a small coastal river in Bithynia and the hamlet at its mouth, where small ships could anchor beside a shrine of Aphrodite, sheltered by a little island in front of the harbour. The spot probably lies about three kilometres west of Şile on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, where a long island sits just off the beach, although no ancient remains have been found there. Sailing guides mention it from the first century BC onwards. On the map the river itself is mistakenly labelled Sagar, and in this crowded corner the road line seems to have been forgotten.
