Athenas

Athen · Athens · Αθήνα

Listen to the story

Athenas, the classical name set in the accusative of direction, literally 'towards Athens', marks the great city of Attica, yet the map grants it only a modest pair of towers, smaller even than the drawing for Thessalonike. That restraint probably reflects the city's decline after the Herulian raid of AD 267. Squeezed by the map's narrow format, Attica is flattened and folded over, so Athens seems to sit on the south coast. Five Roman miles, about seven and a half kilometres, are given to Piraeus, but the road line itself is missing, and two further roads were begun and never finished.
