Augusta Bona
Troyes
Listen to the story
Augusta Bona carries the name of the emperor Augustus, and scholars count it among the town names on the map that certainly go back to his lifetime. It lay in the Gallic province of Lugdunensis as the chief town of the Tricassini, and it is Troyes in France today. That tribal name slowly took over. The Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus already calls the town Tricassae, and medieval coins read Trecas, the form that became Troyes. On the map the road line leaving the town towards Eburobriga is faint and was perhaps added later, and some older copies left it out entirely.
