Augusta Ruracum
Augst
Listen to the story
Augusta Ruracum was a Roman colony on the Rhine, founded in 44 or 43 BC on the land of the Celtic Raurici, where the town of Augst near Basel in Switzerland stands today. Its founder, Lucius Munatius Plancus, recorded in an inscription at Gaeta that he had planted two colonies in Gaul: Lyon and this one. Under Augustus the settlement took the emperor's name. The Tabula marks it with a small drawing of a house. Excavations have uncovered a theatre, temples and a forum, and in 1962 a hoard of late Roman silver, buried in the early 350s, came to light nearby at Kaiseraugst.
