Augusta Vindelicum

Augsburg

Listen to the story

Augusta Vindelicum, the Augusta of the Vindelici, is Augsburg in Bavaria, and it lay where the Wertach flows into the Lech. The town took over from Kempten as capital of the province of Raetia, and Hadrian raised it to a municipium around AD 121. On the map it is a junction where several roads meet, yet the old Via Claudia Augusta from Italy is missing; the Tabula shows the later route over the Brenner Pass instead. Its pair of towers is drawn oddly too: where other towns have a black doorway, three thin vertical strokes stand inside an empty frame.
