Aulona
Kepi Triportit bzw. Vlora
Listen to the story
Aulona was a harbour town on the coast of southern Illyria, in today's Albania, sheltered by the Acroceraunian headland. Its first settlement lay at Kepi Triportit, at the far northern end of the Bay of Vlora, but in the first century it moved a short way to the site of modern Vlora, perhaps because the Narta lagoon was turning to marsh. In late antiquity the town served as a port for the Via Egnatia and for the crossing to Brundisium, and it gradually overtook Apollonia, whose harbour was silting up. The map reflects this: the town has an unusual pair of towers with small balls on both roofs, while Apollonia has no picture at all.
