Listen to the story
Ausrito is the map's clipped form of Augustoritum, a name that means 'the ford of Augustus'. Founded between about 16 and 12 BC as the chief town of the Gaulish Lemovices on the river Vienne, it later took the tribe's name, which lives on in Limoges, in France. The Tabula marks it with a pair of towers on the road from Bordeaux to Bourges, a junction where branch roads led off towards Saintes and Clermont. The Roman town had aqueducts, a forum, a theatre, an amphitheatre and baths, but in the late Empire it shrank to a smaller walled fort.
