City
Augusta Tres Virorum
Trier
Listen to the story
Augusta Tres Virorum is Trier on the Moselle, but the name hides a slip. The city was Augusta Treverorum, named after the Treveri tribe. A copyist who did not know the tribe seems to have thought of the tres viri, the three-man boards that held office in Roman towns, and wrote 'of the three men' instead, even though the tribal name stands correctly spelled nearby. The drawing is surprisingly modest, a plain pair of towers no larger than those of Cologne or Mainz, for a city that became an imperial residence in 293. Perhaps the map shows Trier after the court and administration had moved away.
