Listen to the story
Arelato is Arles in the south of France, marked on the Tabula with the familiar pair of towers. Founded in 46 BC as a colony for Julius Caesar's veterans of the Sixth Legion, the town prospered once canals dug under Marius in 104 BC led from it to the bay of Fos, bypassing the silting Rhône delta. Constantine linked the older town to a newer quarter across the river with a bridge, and so the poet Ausonius hailed it as double Arles, a little Gallic Rome that opened its harbour to the trade of the whole Roman world.
