Araegenue
Vieux
Listen to the story
Araegenua was a town of the Viducasses, a Gaulish people in what is now Normandy, and is usually placed at the extensive Roman ruins of Vieux on the Orne, near Caen. Its Celtic name has been read as 'river mouth', and the geographer Ptolemy seems to add exactly those words beside it. The famous Marble of Thorigny was found here, a stone of AD 238 honouring Titus Sennius Sollemnis of the free community of the Viducasses. Yet the location is disputed: Vieux lies well off the road from Bayeux, and Flers or Argentan have been proposed instead.
