Apula

Listen to the story
Apula, better known as Apulum, grew out of the camp of the Thirteenth Legion Gemina, which the emperor Trajan placed beside the river Mureș in Dacia. Under Marcus Aurelius the civilian settlement became a municipium and then a colony, the capital of the district of Dacia Apulensis, with Aesculapius and Hygieia as its city gods and gold mines in the hills nearby. After the Romans withdrew, Slavs called the ruins Belgrad, the white castle, which the Hungarians translated as Alba. A chieftain named Gyula added the rest, and the town is now Alba Iulia in Romania.
