Apammari

~ Abu Daghmah

Listen to the story

Apammari is usually taken for the Syrian town of Amphipolis, near modern Abu Daghmah, though the identification is not certain. According to the Roman writer Pliny, Amphipolis was the later name of Thapsakos, a name the king Seleucus Nicator gave it; its Syrian name was Turmeda. If the match is right, the road that reaches it from Hierapolis makes a strange detour, but the map offers similarly roundabout routes elsewhere. It lies eighteen Roman miles from Eraciza and eight from Serre.
