Antium
Anzio
Listen to the story
Antium lay on a rocky point of the Latin coast, where the harbour town of Anzio stands now, and the map marks it with a pair of towers. In 338 BC Rome subdued the rebellious town, confiscated its fleet and forbade it to go to sea. The beaks of the captured warships were fixed to the speakers' platform in the Roman Forum, which took its name, the Rostra, from them. Later Antium became a fashionable villa retreat for wealthy Romans. Caligula and Nero were both born here, and Nero spent heavily on a new harbour, with little success.
