Apamea Ciboton
Dinar
Listen to the story
Apamea Ciboton, today Dinar in Turkey, was founded by King Antiochus the First beside the older hill town of Kelainai and named after his mother Apama. Legend placed the flute contest between Marsyas and Apollo here. The nickname is Greek for 'the chest', and city coins show a box on the reverse, perhaps a nod to its trade, which the geographer Strabo ranked second only to Ephesus. Later it was linked with Noah's Ark, called by the same word in the Greek Bible. The map gives the town a pair of towers beside a nameless river, probably the Maeander.
