City
Antiochia
Erk Kala · Gyaur Kala (Barrington)
Listen to the story
A pair of towers marks Antiochia, though a hole in the parchment has eaten away most of its opening letter. The name means the city of Antiochus, and although its location is disputed, it is usually placed at Gyaur Kala in the oasis of Merv, in Turkmenistan. According to the Roman writer Pliny, Alexander the Great founded an Alexandria here, and after barbarians destroyed it, the Seleucid king Antiochus the First rebuilt it under his own name. The map, drawing on sources from both eras, shows that same Alexandria as a separate neighbouring station. After Crassus was defeated, the Parthians deported captured Romans to this city.
