Animurio
Eski Anamur
Listen to the story
Animurio stood on a cape in Rough Cilicia, the southernmost point of Asia Minor, where the crossing to Cyprus was shortest. Its Greek name meant weather vane. The ruins lie at Eski Anamur in Turkey, where excavations since 1965 have uncovered a theatre, baths, aqueducts and a cemetery of more than three hundred and fifty tomb houses. Captured by the Persians in AD 260, the port flourished again in the fifth century, when many churches were built. The map spells the name with an i in the second syllable, a form otherwise found only in a list compiled in Ravenna, which hints at a late Roman date.
