Listen to the story
Ancialis was a Greek port on the Black Sea coast, today Pomorie in Bulgaria. It was founded by neighbouring Apollonia as a trading post and grew prosperous from its salt pans, which may also have given the town its name. The map marks it with a pair of towers, fitting for a city that minted its own coins from Domitian to Gordian and that the Roman historian Ammianus called a great city. The road onward is a puzzle: no continuous land route led to Apollonia, and eighteen Roman miles is too short for the crossing by boat.
