Listen to the story
Amiternus, the Sabine town the Romans usually called Amiternum, took its name from the river Aternus, whose source lies in its territory, as the Roman scholar Varro already explained. The map marks it with a pair of towers, a sign of real standing. Rome stormed the town in 293 BC, and in 86 BC the historian Sallust was born here. Ruins of a theatre and an amphitheatre survive at San Vittorino near L'Aquila in Italy, although much was destroyed when Emperor Frederick the Second founded the nearby city of Aquila.
