Listen to the story

Alexandria Troas, the Alexandria of the Troad, the land around Troy, began shortly after 306 BC as Antigoneia, founded by Antigonus the One-Eyed. His rival Lysimachus renamed it in honour of Alexander. Later a Roman colony, probably under Augustus, it was grand enough that Caesar, and perhaps Constantine, considered making it the capital of the empire. The map gives it a pair of towers, a little smaller than usual, like its neighbours on a coastline folded sideways for lack of space. Its ruins at Eskistanbul in Turkey were once mistaken by travellers for Troy itself.
