Ilio

Hisarlık

Listen to the story

Troy itself stands behind Ilio: this is Ilium, the city at Hisarlık in Turkey, yet the map gives it no picture, only its name on the road. The road from Dardanos reaches it without any distance figure. The copyist placed Dardanos high enough to leave room for the small kink that usually marks a stop before Ilio, but never drew it, and the start of the next stretch is not marked either. From here the map counts sixteen Roman miles on to Alexandria Troas, and the Roman register of routes lists the place on the same road.
