Illiberre

Elne

Illiberre is Elne, an Iberian foundation, as its name shows, and once an important town: Hannibal passed here on his march to Italy. By the time of the Roman naturalist Pliny it was only, in his words, the faint trace of a once great city. Constantine restored it and named it Helena after his mother, whence the modern Elne, and in 350 the emperor Constans was killed at the fort of Helena. Yet the map still gives the old name, a sign that its information here is older than the renaming.
