Listen to the story
In Alpe Iulia, in the Julian Alps, marks the pass where the road from Aquileia to Emona, the Roman Ljubljana, crossed the mountains at Hrušica, the pear-tree forest. The pilgrim from Bordeaux notes that here the Julian Alps rise, and calls the summit Ad Pirum, at the pear tree. The road saved two days of travel, and in late Roman times a fort for five hundred soldiers held the pass as part of the barrier guarding Italy. On the map the name stands apart from the three unnamed ridges of the Julian Alps, perhaps because the copyist's original was already damaged.
