Road station

inde Silanos XIX]?

Listen to the story

Beyond Ad Silanos, on the road from Aquileia over the Alps to Virunum, the map draws three small hooks that mark stations but gives them neither names nor distances; this is the first of them. A Roman register of routes follows the same road over the Pontebba pass, with stages of nineteen, twenty-four and ten Roman miles by way of Larix and Santicum, the Roman Villach, and older research has filled the gap from it. Which name belongs to this first hook remains uncertain.
