In Alpe Maritima

La Turbie

In Alpe Maritima, on the Maritime Alps, is La Turbie, high above Monte Carlo, where the coast road crossed the last spur of the Alps into Italy. Here stands the Trophy of Augustus, a huge monument some forty-nine metres high, whose dedication by the Senate in 7 or 6 BC lists all the Alpine peoples conquered under the emperor, a text the Roman naturalist Pliny copied. Milestones nearby count six hundred and one miles from Rome. Oddly, on the map the chain of the Alps ends too far west, so that the Var appears east of the mountains.
