In Portu, in the harbour, points to a river port on the Arno, a river the map does not draw, on the road from Pisa to Florence. It probably lay at Empoli, where boats still landed in the twelfth century and whose name may come from an ancient emporium, a trading place; a document of 780 already speaks of Saint Michael in Impore. Others place the station at San Miniato.
