Inter Manana
Terni
Listen to the story
Inter manana is Terni, the Roman Interamna, which appears twice on the map, here with its name split and garbled. The Roman scholar Varro explains the real name: the town stood between rivers. For generations its people quarrelled with Reate upstream over the waters of the Nar: Cicero pleaded against them in 54 BC, and in 15 AD they warned the Senate that a plan to divert the river would ruin the most fertile fields of Italy.
