Listen to the story
Invinias, in Latin 'in the vineyards', was a road station on the edge of Pozzuoli, in the famous wine country around Puteoli and Baiae that the Roman writer Pliny praised for its vine-covered hills. A street between the amphitheatre and the Solfatara crater is still called Strada Vigna. The map gives it a small building drawing much like the one for Baiae across the bay, a type usually reserved for spas, though nothing links this place to hot springs, and why it was chosen remains unexplained. A festival calendar from AD 387 records a grape harvest feast held here each fifteenth of October.
