In summo pyreneo

Col de Perthus

In summo pyreneo, at the top of the Pyrenees, marks the pass of Le Perthus, where the road from Narbonne crossed into Spain below Bellegarde. Nearby stood the trophy of Pompey, the victory monument he set on a height beside the road after his conquest of Spain. Hasdrubal crossed here in 207 BC. The same name was given to Roman stations at other passes, at Somport and at Roncesvalles. On the map the road simply runs through the mountain range, and the start of the next stretch is not marked.
