Smynthium

Külahlı, heute: Gülpınar

Listen to the story

Smynthium was the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus on the west coast of the Troad, near Gülpınar; Homer already knows the cult, which probably began as a plea for protection against field mice. The temple, built in the middle Hellenistic period over an older shrine, was the most famous of its kind in western Asia Minor, and it held a statue of Apollo by Scopas of Paros with a mouse beneath his foot. In Roman times a road station grew up here, with a bath building. On the map the name is badly smudged, and two of its letters are barely legible.
