Socratu
Socratu has faded badly on the parchment: only the opening So and the closing tu, which sits across the join between two sheets of the map, can be read with confidence, and older copies give the whole name as Socratu, though the middle letters may rather read Sorratu. The Phrygian station, mentioned nowhere else, lay on the road from Hierapolis, at Pamukkale, to Apamea. Suggestions abound: ruins at Karasilar, the Anaua of Herodotus later renamed after a certain Socrates of Tralleis, or a garbled Atyochorion, the place of Atys. Some think the entry simply corrupt.
