Soloe

Viranşehir

Soloe is really the same place as the Pompeiopolis drawn just before it, which the map even shows twice; the mix-up was already in the source the map shares with the Ravenna list, since ancient writers often gave both names together. Soloi was a Greek city founded by settlers from Rhodes; when it had lost its people, Pompey settled surviving pirates here and renamed it after himself. It was the home of the Stoic Chrysippus and the poets Philemon and Aratus, and the geographer Mela reports that stones thrown at Aratus' tomb burst apart. Even the word solecism, a blunder in speech, was traced to its people.
