Aulon Cilicius
z.T. MB von Tarsus (Miller)
Aulon Cilicius was the stretch of sea between Cilicia and Cyprus. Aulon is Greek for a valley or narrow pass and was often used for a strait; Lucian, Pliny, Ptolemy and Orosius know the name, and a late Roman description of the provinces has Cyprus bounded on the north by this Aulon. On the map the name has largely faded, but enough remains to show that this sea was named. The first printed edition still read Aulon Cilicius in full, a later one already with gaps.
