Adana
Adana has kept its name to this day. In Roman times it lay inland in the fertile Cilician plain on the river Saros, which was already navigable there, and on the road from Tarsus to Antioch. A Greek legend made it the foundation of two heroes, Adanos and Saros, after a war lost against Tarsus, and real quarrels with that neighbour were frequent. In 67 BC Pompey settled defeated Cilician pirates here, and in 260 the Sasanian king Shapur took the city. Its bridge over the Saros, probably built under Hadrian and renewed by Justinian, is known today as Taşköprü.
