Mompsistea

Yakapınar, ehem. Misis

Listen to the story

Mompsistea is a late, slightly jumbled form of Mopsuestia, the hearth of Mopsos, named after the legendary seer whose Cilician dynasty is known from the inscriptions of Karatepe. The town, today Yakapınar, formerly Misis, lay on the lower Pyramos, where the road to Syria crossed the river by a Roman bridge; it also had a theatre and an aqueduct. Its most famous bishop, from 392 to 428, was Theodore, a teacher of the Church highly esteemed in his lifetime. On the map three roads leave the station, and a picture marking the junction may have been lost.
