Issos
Yeşil Hüyük, ehemals Kınet Höyüğü
Issos lies at the mound of Yeşil Hüyük, once Kınet Höyüğü, in the innermost corner of the gulf named after it, near the mouth of the Pinaros. Here in 333 BC Alexander defeated Darius, and the town was later also called Nikopolis, city of victory. Xenophon still saw a large and prosperous city, the last of Cilicia on the sea, and it may be the Izziya of Hittite texts; but from about 50 BC silting and earthquake damage led to the old site being abandoned, and the geographer Mela found a great name with hardly a town left. The map gives it no picture, perhaps reflecting that decline.
