Iuenna

Globasnitz (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Iuenna was a Roman settlement at Globasnitz in the Jaun valley of Carinthia, twenty-three Roman miles from Virunum on the road to Celeia. Above it, on the Hemmaberg, stood a sanctuary of the Celtic god Iovenat, which from the fifth century became a Christian place of pilgrimage with early churches. Beyond Iuenna the road crossed the Karawanks by the low Seeberg saddle, probably only as a mule track; the map sets the next stage, to Colatio, at twenty-two miles.
