Istamo
Isthmos · Ισθμός
Istamo stands for the Isthmus of Corinth, and on the map its road makes strange right-angled turns found nowhere else, perhaps a memory of the wall across the isthmus or of the Diolkos, the paved track on which ships were hauled from one sea to the other. As Thucydides tells, the Spartans in 412 BC dragged half their fleet across this way. The map also squeezes the isthmus almost upright and pushes its two harbours into the Peloponnese. The list of places compiled in Ravenna garbles the name to Stomis and takes it for a town.
