Road station
Iuliaco
Jülich
Ivliaco is Iuliacum, today Jülich in Germany, a road station where the road from Cologne to Tongeren crossed the river Rur. Its villagers set up a column to Jupiter early in the second century, and tiles of the Sixth Legion show that soldiers were here too. The place was the centre of a fertile countryside full of farming estates, and early in the fourth century it was given a many-sided wall. The Roman historian Ammianus tells how in 357 strong bands of Franks plundered the undefended country around it. The old idea that the name honours Julius Caesar is mistaken.
